To the Ever so Curious Rosella,

Many are not limited to the night. Some like vampires are due to their weakness to the sun, but night creatures can function in the day, not unlike any other predator. They simply prefer the night. As for me, I am at my most comfortable this way.

It's no trouble at all. Most of what you hear are simply devices at work. The vents help with air circulation and giving cold air when the days are too hot. I believe they also provide warm air as well during the winter. The refrigerator is meant to store food that easily perishes, like most vegetables or meats.

I'm actually quite surprised at the number of things here that I don't recognize. It's fascinating.

Oh, that would make sense. It's not the growling of a beast, but the humming of magic at work. That does make things quite a bit less...preoccupying. I'd rather suspected the bath was enchanted, in the same fashion. How else could so much water come out of nowhere at all?

I do wish I had a small light for my bedroom, though. All the lamps are too bright, but without them it's too dark.

I suspect there is some mix of magic and technology. Normally with pipes and plumbing, it is drawn from a water source, but in this case I would not be surprised if it came from more magical means considering our situation.

Something like a candle, then? There are options, I have no doubt.

Do you know, I asked about it at one of the shops and they did have candles in mason jars, only I asked if they would be able to stay lit all night without going out, and the shopkeeper said it would certainly set fire to something if I tried, so I oughtn't.

They rather seemed to think I should only want them for the smell. Can you imagine, worrying about something so silly as the smell of a candle?

That's very strange. I suppose I could see some benefit in the form of incense or oil extracts, but scented candles.

Pumpkin! Can you imagine? Oh, but not just pumpkin. It actually smelled a bit like a pie shop, with cinnamon and cloves and things in it, too. It WAS rather clever...perhaps I ought to have gotten it. Then maybe I'd dream about pies.

How is it that you know so much about plumbing and devices and things? You said you weren't a knight, but I don't recall you ever mentioned what you are instead.

That does actually sound quite pleasant. Do you like pies then?

My father was a scientist, among many other things. My mother was a doctor. Much of what I know I learned from them. So admittedly, I have an advantage in learning things here than some might.

I love them! Well, I like most sweets, actually, I oughtn't show any unfair bias toward pies. When I was a girl I learned to steal down to the kitchens and sneak cookies and tarts before supper, and I never got in trouble for spoiling my appetite because it was my father who taught me all his best tricks.

A scientist is a sort of scholar, isn't it? Like an alchemist? I know you have magicians where you come from, you mentioned knowing one when we were in the desert.

...If you'd rather not talk about them, I understand. You said "was", so — I don't want to pry, if it's something you'd rather not dwell on.

Parents can be quite the best and worst influences.

A bit of both, I suppose. And yes, we do have magicians. Magic and science alike were generally respected in our household.

I lost my mother last year. My father died just a few short months ago.

I know that doesn't make much difference. All the condolences in the world won't...they're just words. They don't change anything of the ache.

Condolences are still more than I would expect.

No. I was an only child, and my parents had no siblings or parents left to the world either.

Kindness is a rare thing in much of the world. Not nonexistent but certainly not what I would call typical.

I think people find themselves short on kindness when they're afraid. It's a shame, because that's also often when kindness is needed most.

In any case, it's not rare with you.

You were, but if you were thinking that you'd been the rudest person I've had the displeasure of meeting in recent memory, I'm sorry to say you've run up against some very stiff competition.

You did offer your help, however gruffly at first. And you've yet to call me ugly. So I'm afraid you'll have to be far more rude, now, if you intend to make up that lost ground.
